The Faster Horse Problem

"If I had asked people what they want, they would have said a faster horse."

Henry Ford said: "If I had asked people what they want, they would have said a faster horse."

He didn't invent the automobile because his customers requested it. He invented it because he understood something they couldn't yet articulate. They knew they were stuck. They knew they wanted to move faster, go further, arrive without exhaustion. But they asked for what they could imagine within the framework they already knew.

Faster horse. Better horse. Stronger horse.

The automobile required imagining outside the frame entirely.

This is the exact dynamic I encounter in Soul Key sessions.

Someone arrives carrying a weight that has no name. Or a name that doesn't fit. They describe what they think they need. The language comes out predictable: to feel good again. To have more energy. To stop being depressed. To actually enjoy my life. To know I have purpose. To know I matter. To know I have worth.

All of it real.

All of it the faster horse.

The thinking mind is doing its job. It's naming the symptom it can see. I hurt. I'm numb. I'm performing a life that doesn't belong to me. I don't know why I'm here. The mind presents these as problems to solve, and it has a whole arsenal ready. Therapy, medication, coaching, manifestation, discipline, willpower. All the faster horses.

But the soul doesn't need any of them.

What the soul needs is to be met. To be remembered. To be connected back to the part of you that was never actually broken, just buried under the weight of what you inherited and what you were taught to survive.

This is why I don't ask.

If I asked you what you want, I would get the faster horse. I would get the symptom. I would get the thing your conscious mind has already decided is wrong and needs fixing. And we would spend months, maybe years, building a better version of the cage you're already in.

Instead, I do something different.

I create a space where your spirit gets to speak. Not through words. Through image, through sensation, through the encounters that arrive unbidden in the deepest part of yourself. Your guides show up. Your ancestors show up. The wound that wasn't originally yours but has been living in your body gets to be witnessed, not just survived. The part of you that knows exactly why you're here, what you came to do, and what you're actually built for steps forward.

The soul doesn't ask permission. It doesn't negotiate. It reveals.

Picture the moment when what you thought you needed falls away and something true takes its place. Someone arrives asking for relief from depression and encounters the generational grief that lives in their lineage, still undigested. They meet it. They witness it. They choose to stop carrying it. The depression doesn't disappear because they fixed the symptom. It lifts because they finally addressed the root.

Or someone arrives exhausted, asking for more energy, more drive, more purpose. In the soul space they discover they've been running on fumes because they're running in the wrong direction. The energy wasn't the problem. The direction was. The exhaustion was the soul's way of saying: stop. Turn around. This isn't yours to carry.

The shift that comes is radical and it's never what they thought they needed.

Purpose doesn't arrive as a concept. It arrives as a knowing. Worth doesn't come as an affirmation. It comes as a memory, a recollection of something you were born knowing. Mattering doesn't require external validation. It emerges when you connect to the part of you that's always mattered, always been held, always been known.

The faster horse gets you there faster within the same world.

The automobile creates a different world entirely.

I don't ask what you want because I'm not here to optimize your suffering. I'm not here to help you perform better or achieve faster or feel good about the life that was never actually yours to begin with. I don't offer solutions to the symptoms your thinking mind has diagnosed.

I offer a threshold.

On one side is the framework you know, the horse you've been riding, the cage you've learned to call home. On the other side is the part of you that was never trapped, never broken, never actually lost. It's still there. It's been waiting for someone to listen.

Your spirit knows what you need. The soul carries the blueprint of why you're here. The wound knows how it wants to heal, what it needs to finally be released.

I simply create the space where you can meet it.

Not faster. Different.

Not better. True.
